EARTHWORKS by Jenny Zolkwer and Beverley Matchette- Downes

'Earthworks' is a joint exhibition showcasing the muted stoneware vessels of Jenny Zolkwer against the backdrop of Beverley Matchette-Downes' vibrant hand pulled prints inspired by the Chiltern Hills.

We are delighted to host this beautiful exhibition from 2nd -16th December.

Earthworks celebrates the mud underneath and the trees which flourish above our ground.

A maker of simple things

Jenny uses stoneware and porcelain to make tactile ceramics on the wheel at her studio.

Ceramics is a slow-paced art form.  You can’t rush at it.  Each piece is individual, made carefully in the hope that it will be loved and used every day.  It takes time, experience and attention to shape the piece, refine it, fire and glaze it and fire it again.

There is time and care in every piece.

Jenny’s work is made to be cherished because an ordinary mug can become the foundation or support act in a busy day, creating a moment of calm and warmth, even of hope and joy.

Utility ware, be they bowls or jugs, mugs or other vessels which are all good to hold and good to use.

Her pots are quiet, understated pieces, they combine subtle colours with simple shapes to continue the private conversation between the pot and its holder.

Work shown is made on the wheel using black stoneware, porcelain as well as buff stoneware. Some are treated with slips and a variety of glazes; many have been fired multiple times until they feel finished.

Beverley Matchette-Downes–Contemporary artist

Printmaker

Initially trained as a painter, Beverley now specialises in Printmaking, with much of her work including collography, monoprinting and waterless lithography.

She still draws and paints, but printmaking dominates her practice. She loves the processes involved in printmaking and the alchemy involved.

Her work is rooted in the observation of tangible things around her. Photography is often her starting point as she uses her camera as a sketchbook to spark ideas for her work.  Composition and pictorial space are a preoccupation, and she strives to produce images which are slightly more abstract than reality to make them visually exciting and her own.

Beverley is exhibiting a stunning collection of tree lithographs throughout the Earthworks exhibition.
